Jeremie, long nicknamed La Cite des Poetes for a lineage of significant Haitian poets born there including Etzer Vilaire, hosts the Jeremie Poetry Festival, created to revive interest in poetry through conferences, writing workshops, film screenings, excursions, and book signings held in the city and the wider Grand'Anse region.
Jeremie, a coastal city on Haiti's southern Grand'Anse peninsula, carries the nickname La Cite des Poetes, the City of Poets, a reputation built on a lineage of significant Haitian literary figures born there, including Etzer Vilaire, regarded as a leading champion of early twentieth-century Haitian poetry, alongside Edmond Laforest, Timothee Paret, Robert Lataillade, Josaphat-Robert Large, and the contemporary poet Evains Wenche.
