Rara is a Haitian tradition combining music, Vodou ritual and street procession, running each Sunday night from the start of Lent through Easter week. Leogane, considered the rara capital of Haiti, draws bands converging from across the region, with the season historically bringing tens of thousands of visitors to the town.
Rara is at once a season, a festival, a genre of music, a religious ritual, a form of dance and, at times, a technique of political protest, a description festival scholars use to capture how thoroughly the tradition resists categorization as a single kind of event.
