Plaine-du-Nord St Jacques Day in Plaine-du-Nord

On July 24 and 25, pilgrims march to the Trou Saint-Jacques mud basin in Plaine-du-Nord to bathe in honor of Saint James the Greater and the Vodou spirit Ogou, a rite also practiced in smaller form on ordinary Tuesdays and Thursdays year-round. Bullock sacrifice, candle offerings and buckets of water carried when rain runs short make this one of Haiti's most physically direct religious observances.

A mud-filled basin on the edge of Plaine-du-Nord, known locally as the Trou Saint-Jacques or Bassin Saint-Jacques, becomes the center of one of Haiti's most physically striking religious gatherings each July 24 and 25.
