The Good Friday Way of the Cross is Rome's candlelit reenactment of Christ's Passion, held each year at the Colosseum, where the pope leads pilgrims through the traditional fourteen Stations of the Cross. Meditations written annually by a different author guide the prayers, and the ceremony draws tens of thousands of the faithful along with a global broadcast audience each Good Friday evening.
On Good Friday evening, floodlights around the Colosseum give way to torches, and the vast oval that once staged gladiatorial spectacle becomes the stage for a very different kind of endurance.
