Oath of the Pontifical Swiss Guards in Vatican City

Each May 6, new recruits of the Pontifical Swiss Guard swear their oath of loyalty to the pope in the San Damaso Courtyard of the Apostolic Palace. The date commemorates the Sack of Rome in 1527, when most of the guard died defending Pope Clement VII, and the ceremony remains one of the Vatican's most distinctive annual rites.

Every May 6, the San Damaso Courtyard inside the Apostolic Palace fills with a scene that looks pulled from another century: young men in striped Renaissance-style uniform, halberds in hand, standing to swear loyalty to an institution that has outlasted the empire that once tried to destroy it.
