Alfombras de Aserrin Comayagua in Comayagua

The origin tradition of Honduras's Holy Week sawdust carpets, begun in Comayagua in 1963 by Miriam Mejía de Zapata in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral atrium, in which families spend full days laying dyed sawdust, flowers and seeds into elaborate images that Good Friday processions then walk directly over.

The sawdust carpet tradition now associated with Holy Week across much of Honduras began in Comayagua in 1963, when Miriam Mejía de Zapata, a woman originally from El Salvador who had settled in the city, created the first alfombra de aserrín in the atrium of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.
