Guancasco Gracias-Mejicapa in Gracias
The Guancasco between Gracias and Mejicapa is a Lenca reconciliation ceremony in which the two Lempira communities exchange their patron saints' images in procession, accompanied by music, dance and corn chicha. Rooted in pre-Hispanic alliance ceremonies later adapted to a Catholic religious framework, it typically takes place around the December-to-January turn of the year.
Two Lenca communities in the department of Lempira, the town of Gracias and the neighbouring settlement of Mejicapa, exchange the images of their patron saints in a ceremony called the Guancasco, a word from the Lenca language meaning something close to a peace pact.
