Semana Santa Honduras in Honduras

Honduran Semana Santa is marked nationwide by alfombras de aserrin, elaborate sawdust carpets depicting religious scenes laid along procession routes, a tradition originating in Comayagua in 1963 and since spread to Tegucigalpa, Copan, Danli, Gracias and other cities. Processions re-enacting the Passion walk directly over the carpets, dispersing the artwork as part of the ritual.

Streets across Honduras fill with elaborate carpets of dyed sawdust each Holy Week, a tradition that began in the colonial city of Comayagua in 1963, when Miriam Mejia de Zapata created the first alfombra de aserrin to mark the appointment of a new bishop.
