The story

Festival Lenca La Esperanza in La Esperanza

La Esperanza's Festival Nacional del Choro y el Vino, spanning Intibucá and Yamaranguila as well, celebrates the region's rare wild choro mushroom and highland fruit wines with tastings, a Lenca artisan fair, a fire parade called the Desfile del Fuego, and a national folkloric dance festival in Honduras's cool Intibucá highlands.

La Esperanza, the Intibucá department capital and one of Honduras's highest, coolest towns, hosts the Festival Nacional del Choro y el Vino each year, organized by the Fundación Intibucana de Desarrollo with support from the Instituto Hondureño de Turismo, in a celebration that has run for close to two decades and now spans the municipalities of La Esperanza, Intibucá and Yamaranguila together.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The choro mushroom at the festival's center, scientifically Amanita caesarea, is reportedly commercially produced in only three places worldwide, the Sierra de Opalaca region around La Esperanza, Italy and Mexico, giving this festival a genuinely rare culinary claim that distinguishes it from generic regional food festivals elsewhere in Honduras and draws specific interest each year from visiting chefs, mycologists and food writers alike during the short passing mushroom harvest season
