The story

Hong Kong French Film Festival in Hong Kong cinemas

Founded in 1953 by Alliance Française de Hong Kong with a screening of Jacques Tati's Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, this is the oldest film festival in Hong Kong and one of Asia's longest-running. It now moves annually across the city's cinemas each November and December, mixing new French releases with retrospectives and Francophone cinema.

The Hong Kong French Film Festival began in 1953, when Alliance Française de Hong Kong organised a screening of Jacques Tati's comedy Monsieur Hulot's Holiday at the Queen's Theatre, making it the oldest film festival in Hong Kong and one of the oldest continuously held film festivals in Asia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Alliance Française estimates it has screened more than 1,600 French films since the festival's founding, a scale built up over seven decades rather than a single flagship premiere

02

The mystery stays covered

Unlike venue-anchored festivals, it rotates each year across a set of Hong Kong cinemas, and many screenings include post-film discussions or introductions from visiting French directors, actors and critics, giving the programme a cultural-diplomacy dimension beyond simple film exhibition that most single-venue thematic festivals in the city cannot match
