The story

Hong Kong Pride Parade in Hong Kong Island / Kowloon

Hong Kong's first organised Pride Parade marched from Causeway Bay to Southorn Playground in Wan Chai in December 2008, growing out of smaller gatherings earlier in the decade. It has returned most years since as one of East Asia's larger annual LGBT public marches, combining a street procession with a festival area of community stalls.

Hong Kong's first organised Pride Parade took place on 13 December 2008, when marchers walked from the Great George Street pedestrian area in Causeway Bay to Southorn Playground in Wan Chai, both on Hong Kong Island.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike Pride marches in several neighbouring cities, Hong Kong's parade has generally proceeded without a large organised counter-protest presence, a distinction frequently noted by participants and researchers studying LGBT public visibility in the region

02

The mystery stays covered

The event pairs a walking procession through central districts with a festival ground hosting stalls from LGBT organisations, consulates, businesses and support groups, alongside music and speeches, giving attendees a mix of political demonstration and community fair within a single afternoon
