Ars Sacra Festival Budapest in Budapest
Growing from Cardinal Peter Erdo's 2007 City Mission, Ars Sacra Festival runs each September during Hungarian Cultural Heritage Days, opening churches, synagogues, and sacred buildings across Budapest for free concerts, exhibitions, and art programs spanning roughly eleven artistic genres. Many participating congregations use the festival specifically to open spaces normally closed to non-worshippers.
Cardinal Peter Erdo, Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, initiated a City Mission in Budapest in 2007 modeled on similar Catholic urban mission events held in Paris, Vienna, Lisbon, and Brussels, and the following year a dedicated foundation built the Ars Sacra Festival on that foundation, aiming to surface the Jewish and Christian roots of European culture through art across roughly eleven distinct artistic genres.
