The story

Verzio International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Budapest

Founded in 2004 by Blinken OSA Archivum researchers inspired by Prague's One World festival, Verzio screens human rights documentaries each November across Budapest cinemas and, since 2020, a nationwide streaming platform called Verziotheque. Post-screening discussions with visiting directors remain a defining fixture of the in-person Budapest program each year.

Zsuzsa Zadori and Oksana Sarkisova of the Blinken OSA Archivum founded Verzio in 2004 in cooperation with Andrea Pocsik, directly inspired by the One World human rights documentary festival in Prague, which had shown there was appetite for this kind of platform without an equivalent yet existing in Hungary.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's pandemic-era pivot produced Verziotheque, a lasting online streaming platform extending access beyond Budapest's physical cinemas, and a twentieth-anniversary edition expanded the festival internationally to Vienna in partnership with Central European University's network

02

The mystery stays covered

Post-screening discussions with visiting directors remain a defining fixture of the in-person program, giving Budapest audiences direct access to filmmakers behind the human rights documentaries screened that same evening, a level of engagement the festival preserved even as its reach expanded through streaming
