Galiba Children's Festival Debrecen in Debrecen

Galiba Children's Festival, founded in 2012 as a companion to the Debrecen Flower Carnival, runs each August at Nagyerdei Amusement Park and the Old Town Hall courtyard. Its roughly eighty daily programs include puppet shows, folk dance, and craft activities for families, built around a Lúdas Matyi folk-tale look-alike, with free admission across both venues.

Named after Galiba, a small-goose character from Hungarian folk storytelling, this children's festival was founded in 2012 as a companion event to the much older Debrecen Flower Carnival, running each August across two main venues rather than following the Flower Carnival's parade route.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Galiba's defining feature is its folk-tale anchor: a Lúdas Matyi look-alike and related competitions give children a specific character to follow across the festival's roughly eighty daily programs, rather than a generic mix of unrelated activities

02

The mystery stays covered

Splitting the festival across two distinct venues, the Nagyerdei Amusement Park and the Old Town Hall courtyard, lets families choose between a park setting with concerts and dance, and a historic-center courtyard focused on puppet theatre and crafts

03

The city starts moving

Unlike Debrecen's evening-only carnival program, Galiba runs daytime hours specifically scaled to young children's attention spans, and free admission removes any barrier to dropping in for just part of a day
