The story

Savaria Historical Carnival in Szombathely

Szombathely's late-August historical festival stages a torchlit parade spanning Roman to twentieth-century reenactors, alongside a Roman battle theme park, themed wine and beer zones, and around forty-six reenactment groups from five countries. Local museums extend their hours during the four days, letting visitors pair the parades with the city's actual Roman-era archaeological remains.

Roman surveyors founded Savaria in 45 AD as capital of Pannonia Superior, and the modern city built on its ruins, Szombathely, now stages what is billed as Central Europe's largest historical reenactment festival each late August.

02

The mystery stays covered

Museums and heritage sites across Szombathely extend their opening hours for the four days, giving visitors a chance to connect the staged reenactments directly to the city's genuine Roman-era archaeological remains still visible today
