Akureyri Art Summer in Akureyri
Founded in 1992 by the Gilfelagid art society to fill a summer cultural gap in Akureyri, Listasumar, or Art Summer, is a free, two-month program spanning pop and jazz concerts, visual art exhibitions, and outdoor installations across the town. Now municipally run, it covers June and July with no unifying genre theme, aiming to accommodate the widest possible range of artistic tastes.
The Gilfelagid art society founded Listasumar, or Art Summer, in Akureyri in 1992, responding to what organizers at the time described as a near-total absence of cultural activity in the town during the summer months, when locals assumed nothing was worth staying in town for and visiting artists had nowhere to perform or exhibit.
