Reykjavik Arts Festival in Reykjavík

Iceland's flagship multidisciplinary arts festival, founded in 1969 by conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy and Nordic House director Ivar Eskeland with the Ministry of Culture and City of Reykjavik. Known as Listahatid, it commissions new work across visual art, music, theater, and performance, staged in major venues and unconventional spaces citywide, and now runs on a biennial schedule.

Reykjavik Arts Festival traces its founding to 1969, when conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy and Ivar Eskeland, then director of the Nordic House in Reykjavik, worked with Iceland's Ministry of Culture, the City of Reykjavik, and the Federation of Icelandic Artists to launch an event Icelandic artists had wanted for years.
