Reykjavik Culture Night in Reykjavík
Culture Night, or Menningarnott, began in 1996 as a City of Reykjavik initiative timed to the anniversary of the capital's 1786 founding. Held on the first Saturday after August 18, it has grown into Iceland's largest single-day gathering, drawing close to 100,000 people. Free museum entry, open studios, street concerts, and a harbor fireworks display over Arnarholl hill mark the night's close.
Reykjavik's city council launched Culture Night in 1996 as a modest attempt to give the capital something to do during a summer stretch when much of the population decamped to country cottages.
