The story

Seydisfjordur Arts Festival in Seydisfjordur

LungA Art Festival ran in Seydisfjordur every July from 2000 to 2024, founded by then-teenager Bjort Sigfinnsdottir as a youth arts festival for a remote east fjords town. A week of workshops and lectures led into a closing weekend of exhibitions and concerts, and the festival's model spawned the independent LungA School in 2013 before it concluded after its 25th edition.

Seydisfjordur's LungA Art Festival began in 2000 when Bjort Sigfinnsdottir, then a 15-year-old resident of the town, organized it with friends to bring art and cultural programming to young people in a remote east fjords community with little access to either.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival was founded by a 15-year-old rather than an arts institution, and its closing 25th edition, themed Spiral, was built deliberately around retrospection on the festival's own history rather than new programming, framing the end as an intentional completion rather than a cancellation

02

The mystery stays covered

The workshop structure directly produced a permanent institution, LungA School, that outlived the annual festival itself

03

The city starts moving

Few festivals anywhere give a public account of their own ending in advance, treating closure as a planned final chapter rather than an abrupt or financially forced stop

Living ritual

The week of open workshops culminating in a public exhibition and concert weekend was the festival's defining format throughout its run
