The story

Bengaluru Karaga in Bengaluru

A nine-day Hindu festival centered on Bengaluru's Dharmaraya Swamy Temple, opening with a flag-hoisting rite and centered on the worship of Draupadi. A priest in bridal dress carries a floral pyramid through the old city at night in a trance state, escorted by sword-wielding Veerakumaras, culminating on the Chaitra Purnima full moon after a pre-dawn bath at Sampangi Lake.

At Bengaluru's Dharmaraya Swamy Temple in Thigalarpete, the Karaga priest fasts and observes strict celibacy through the days leading up to Chaitra Purnima, then on the festival's central night is dressed in a nine-yard silk sari and bridal jewelry to carry a pyramid of jasmine and kanakambara flowers on his bare head through the old city.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The karaga carrier's night procession halts at the Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan dargah near Sultanpet, where the Muslim shrine receives the karaga's blessing before the Hindu procession continues onward, a documented cross-community stop that has continued for generations

02

The mystery stays covered

The role itself passes only within specific Thigala families, and the chosen carrier must fast, remain celibate, and dress in bridal silk and jewelry before entering the trance state in which he carries the floral pyramid without ever letting it touch the ground, escorted the entire route by Veerakumaras performing ritual swordplay found nowhere else in Karnataka's festival calendar
