Eid in Delhi in Delhi
Delhi's Eid prayers center on Jama Masjid in Old Delhi, the seventeenth-century mosque built by Shah Jahan, where enormous crowds gather for Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan on the first of Shawwal, and Eid al-Adha, the sacrifice festival on the tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah. Both dates follow the lunar Islamic calendar, so they shift roughly ten days earlier each Gregorian year, and the surrounding lanes fill with feasting afterward.
Jama Masjid, the red sandstone and marble mosque Emperor Shah Jahan completed in the mid-seventeenth century, fills its vast courtyard with tens of thousands of worshippers for Eid prayers, the crowd spilling into the surrounding lanes of Old Delhi.
