The story

Hemis Festival in Hemis

Hemis Festival is the annual Tse-chu of Hemis Monastery, Ladakh's largest and richest Drukpa Kagyu gompa, founded in 1630. Held on the tenth day of the fifth Tibetan lunar month, it marks Guru Padmasambhava's birth anniversary with masked cham dances performed by monks in the monastery courtyard. Once every twelve years, a giant sacred thangka is unveiled.

Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest Buddhist gompa in Ladakh, was founded in 1630 under the patronage of King Sengge Namgyal and belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu lineage.
