The story

Jaipur Literature Festival in Jaipur

William Dalrymple and Namita Gokhale founded the Jaipur Literature Festival in 2006 as an offshoot of the Jaipur Heritage International Festival, and it grew into a standalone five-day event held every January, long associated with the Diggi Palace haveli-hotel. Billed as the world's largest free literary festival, it brings Nobel laureates, Booker winners, and debut authors together for panel discussions, debates, and readings open to the public at no charge.

Namita Gokhale and William Dalrymple launched the Jaipur Literature Festival in 2006 as a small literary strand inside the Jaipur Heritage International Festival, an event the Jaipur Virasat Foundation had created a year earlier after founders Faith Singh and John Singh drew inspiration from the Edinburgh festivals.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes JLF from most literary festivals is its free-admission model at a scale few others attempt: every panel and reading is open to walk-in visitors with no ticket required for general entry, which is part of why it draws crowds that overwhelm any single venue

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's founding is unusually well-documented as an offshoot of the Jaipur Heritage International Festival, itself modeled on Edinburgh's festival culture by Faith Singh and John Singh, giving JLF a lineage rooted in Jaipur's broader heritage-tourism movement rather than a purely commercial book-fair origin
