The story

Rann Utsav in Kutch

Gujarat Tourism's Rann Utsav turns the White Rann of Kutch, a salt desert near the Pakistan border, into a seasonal tent city each winter, running for several months rather than a single date. Full moon nights are the main draw, when moonlight turns the flat white expanse silver, alongside Kutchi folk music, Rabari crafts, and desert safaris out of Dhordo village.

The White Rann of Kutch is a vast bed of dried salt marsh stretching toward the border with Pakistan, and for roughly three to four months each cold season Gujarat Tourism converts its edge, at the village of Dhordo, into a purpose-built tent city.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Rann Utsav apart is its scheduling around the lunar calendar rather than a fixed itinerary: the festival authorities publish a list of full moon nights each season, and those dates draw the heaviest visitor traffic because the salt desert is at its most striking under direct moonlight

02

The mystery stays covered

The tent city at Dhordo is rebuilt from scratch each year and taken down again afterward, styled after the circular bhunga huts Kutchi communities use to survive the region's earthquake-prone ground

03

The city starts moving

Its proximity to the international border also means the surrounding area falls under restricted zones, with some stretches requiring official permission to enter, particularly for foreign visitors
