The story

Dahi Handi Mumbai in Mumbai

Dahi Handi marks Krishna Janmashtami across Maharashtra, when Govinda pathaks stack themselves into human pyramids to break earthen pots of curd strung high above the streets. Mumbai and Thane host the most competitive troupes, with layered thars, brass bands, water-throwing crowds chanting Govinda ala re, and prize money that now runs into the lakhs for the tallest towers.

In 2012 the Jai Jawan Govinda Pathak stacked nine tiers of climbers into a human tower measuring 13.34 metres in Thane, a feat that entered the Guinness World Records and turned dahi handi into a spectacle of engineering as much as devotion.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets Mumbai's dahi handi apart from other Krishna Janmashtami customs elsewhere in India is its transformation into an organized, judged sport

02

The mystery stays covered

Mandals are scored by the number of thars, or human tiers, they complete, and rival troupes travel between dozens of handis in a single day competing for prize money, trophies and sponsorship deals from political parties and businesses

03

The city starts moving

The scale of the competition prompted Maharashtra courts to impose minimum-age and maximum-height restrictions on pyramid participants and to require harnesses and helmets for the top tiers, rules that pathak organizers still negotiate each season

04

The water draws everyone in

Government-backed accident insurance for govindas is another feature found nowhere else
