The story

Elephanta Festival in Mumbai

Since 1989 the Elephanta Festival has brought classical dance and music to Gharapuri island, an hour's ferry ride from the Gateway of India, staged directly in front of the rock-cut Elephanta Caves and their illuminated Trimurti Sadashiva sculpture of Shiva. Organized by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation over two February evenings, it pairs Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi with Hindustani music and closing sets by local Koli fisherfolk.

Since 1989 the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation has staged the Elephanta Festival on Gharapuri, the small island an hour by ferry from the Gateway of India, using the rock-cut Elephanta Caves themselves as a lit backdrop for the performances rather than a separate stage set.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes Elephanta from Maharashtra's other government-run cultural festivals is that the monument is the stage: performers work in front of the cave's illuminated Trimurti Sadashiva sculpture rather than on a built platform near a heritage site, unlike the Ellora Ajanta Festival, which was moved off the Ellora caves in 2002 to a palace venue for conservation reasons

02

The mystery stays covered

Elephanta's caves remain the backdrop precisely because the performance area sits outside the cave mouth on open ground, not inside the rock-cut halls themselves

03

The city starts moving

The island setting, reachable only by boat and with no overnight accommodation, also compresses the entire festival into single-day return trips for most attendees
