The story

Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in Mumbai

The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival is a nine-day, free, non-ticketed street arts festival run annually in February by the nonprofit Kala Ghoda Association, founded in 1998. Centered on South Mumbai's art gallery district near Jehangir Art Gallery and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, it programs visual art, music, theatre, dance, literature, and food across twelve curated sections on closed-off streets.

The Kala Ghoda Association, formed in October 1998 by residents and institutions of the district around Mumbai's Jehangir Art Gallery, launched the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival the following year with the aim of using ticket-free public art to help fund upkeep of the neighborhood's colonial-era buildings.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike most large Indian festivals, Kala Ghoda is organized and funded by a neighborhood nonprofit rather than a government tourism body or commercial promoter, with proceeds going toward restoring the district's Victorian and Art Deco buildings

02

The mystery stays covered

Nearly all programming is free and open-air, spread across twelve curated sections from urban design to children's literature, with street medians and building facades doubling as gallery space

03

The city starts moving

Its fixed civic calendar slot, opening the first Saturday of February and closing the second Sunday, has held steady since the 1999 launch
