Puri Rath Yatra in Puri
Puri's Rath Yatra sends Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra down the Bada Danda in three towering wooden chariots, Nandighosa, Taladhwaja and Darpadalana, rebuilt fresh each year and pulled by throngs of devotees to the Gundicha Temple. Timed to the Hindu month of Ashadha, the festival includes the Gajapati king's ceremonial sweeping of the chariots and gave the English language its word juggernaut.
Puri Rath Yatra matters because it turns local identity into public practice, giving history, skill and belonging a form people can gather around.
