The story

Poush Mela Shantiniketan in Santiniketan

An annual winter fair at Santiniketan, West Bengal, opening on 7 Poush of the Bengali calendar to mark the Brahmo Samaj's founding anniversary. First held in 1894 on Visva-Bharati University's grounds, it centers on Baul folk music alongside handicraft, terracotta, and Santhal tribal craft stalls drawing visitors from across the region.

On 21 December 1843, corresponding to 7 Poush 1250 in the Bengali calendar, Devendranath Tagore and twenty followers formally accepted the Brahmo creed, an event Santiniketan has marked ever since as Poush Utsav.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Poush Mela's core identity is Baul music: the fair is one of the largest annual gatherings of Bengal's itinerant Baul minstrels, whose devotional, boundary-crossing songs blend Vaishnava and Sufi threads

02

The mystery stays covered

Its origin is unusually specific for a folk fair, tied to the exact date the Brahmo Samaj's founder accepted his faith in 1843, and it has run almost every year since 1894, interrupted only by the 1943 Bengal famine, the 1946 Direct Action Day violence, and the COVID-19 pandemic
