Sonepur Cattle Fair in Sonepur
Asia's largest cattle fair, held at the confluence of the Gandak and Ganges near Hajipur, Bihar. Traditionally opening on Kartik Purnima, it once centered on elephant and horse trading dating back to the Mauryan era; elephant sales are now banned. Buffaloes, bullocks, goats, and horses still trade hands amid a sprawling crafts, food, and entertainment mela.
Sonepur sits at the point where the Gandak River meets the Ganges, across from Hajipur and not far upstream from Patna, and it is this confluence that has drawn traders to the site for centuries.
