The story

Onam Thrissur in Thrissur

Onam is Kerala's ten-day harvest festival honoring the mythical King Mahabali, marked statewide by pookalam floral carpets, Vallam Kali snake boat races, and the Onasadya feast on Thiruvonam. Thrissur's own contribution is a giant competitive Athapookalam laid at Thekkinkadu Maidanam on the opening day and Pulikali, a painted tiger-dance procession at Swaraj Round, distinct from the city's separate Thrissur Pooram temple festival held later in the year.

Thrissur marks the fourth day of Onam with Pulikali, a street procession in which men painted head to toe as tigers and hunters dance through Swaraj Round to the beat of chenda drums, a tradition distinct from the city's other major festival, Thrissur Pooram, which is a separate temple event held months later in April or May and should not be confused with this harvest festival.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Thrissur distinguishes its Onam from the rest of Kerala through two specific public traditions: a giant Athapookalam, a floral carpet built by volunteers on the open ground at Thekkinkadu Maidanam using over a tonne of flowers, and Pulikali, in which performers painted as tigers and hunters dance through Swaraj Round to drumming, usually on the fourth day of the festival

02

The mystery stays covered

Neither should be confused with Thrissur Pooram, an unrelated temple festival centered on caparisoned elephants that the city holds separately in a different season
