Thrissur Pooram in Thrissur

Held at Thrissur's Vadakkumnathan Temple during the Malayalam month of Medam, Thrissur Pooram pits two temple factions, Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi, against each other in a day-long spectacle of caparisoned elephants, the massed percussion of Ilanjithara Melam, and the Kudamattom finale, a rapid umbrella-exchange atop thirty elephants, closing with fireworks after midnight. It ranks among Kerala's largest and most elaborate temple festivals.

Thrissur Pooram takes place at the Vadakkumnathan Temple, a Shiva temple that sits on a hilltop at the center of Thrissur city, during the Malayalam month of Medam, when the pooram nakshatra falls in the local calendar.
