Galungan and Kuningan in Bali island
Galungan and Kuningan run on Bali's separate 210-day Pawukon calendar, recurring roughly twice a Gregorian year rather than annually. Galungan marks dharma's mythological victory over adharma and the arrival of ancestral spirits at family homes; Kuningan, ten days later, marks their return to the heavens. Unlike Nyepi and Ogoh-ogoh, which follow Bali's lunar Saka calendar, Galungan and Kuningan run on the entirely separate Pawukon calendar, a 210-day cycle made of thirty wuku weeks of seven days each, which means the pair recurs roughly twice within an ordinary Gregorian year rather than once.
