Gandrung Sewu, first staged in 2012, choreographs a synchronized mass performance of the traditional Gandrung dance by roughly a thousand to thirteen hundred dancers on Banyuwangi's Boom Beach, using the Bali Strait as a literal backdrop. Gandrung carries pre-existing ritual roots tied to Dewi Sri, the rice goddess, historically performed as harvest gratitude by the Using ethnic community, distinguishing this beach spectacle from Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival's urban costume parade.
