Waisak at Borobudur in Borobudur
Waisak commemorates the Buddhist Vesakha full moon each year with a roughly three-kilometer walking procession connecting Candi Mendut, Candi Pawon, and Borobudur, organized by Walubi and led by the Bhikkhu Sangha. A separate, ticketed lantern release follows in the evening after monk-guided meditation, sold through authorized partners rather than offered as an open activity like the procession itself.
Each year on the full moon of Vesakha, the fourth month of the Buddhist lunar calendar, Indonesia's Buddhist community gathers at Borobudur for Waisak, a commemoration organized by Walubi, the Perwakilan Umat Buddha Indonesia, together with the Mahabhikkhu Bhikkhu Indonesia and led by the Bhikkhu Sangha.
