Five Mountains Festival in Magelang

Festival Lima Gunung, founded through Komunitas Lima Gunung in 1997 with a first staged edition in 2002, rotates each year among villages in the foothills of five Magelang-area mountains: Merapi, Merbabu, Andong, Sumbing, and Menoreh. Funded purely through community effort under a 2010 Sumpah Tanah, or land oath, refusing external sponsorship, it features grassroots traditional arts performances by farmer-artist communities.

Cultural figure Sutanto Mendut established Komunitas Lima Gunung in 1997, and the group's Festival Lima Gunung staged its first actual performance edition in 2002, rotating each year among villages set in the foothills of five mountains surrounding the Magelang area: Merapi, Merbabu, Andong, Sumbing, and Menoreh.
