Reog Ponorogo Festival in Ponorogo
Festival Reog Nasional, commonly called Reog Ponorogo Festival, is a national competition among troupes performing reog, Ponorogo's traditional masked dance-drama, first held in 1995 and reaching its thirty-first edition by 2026. Its centerpiece is the dadak merak, a roughly fifty-kilogram tiger-and-peacock mask balanced using only jaw and neck strength, with the grand final staged on the night of 1 Suro as the climax of the broader Grebeg Suro celebration.
The Festival Reog Nasional, commonly shortened to Reog Ponorogo Festival, is a national competition specifically among troupes performing reog, the traditional Ponorogo masked dance-drama, and it runs each year as the climactic component embedded inside the larger Grebeg Suro celebration rather than as a separately scheduled event, drawing troupes from across the wider Ponorogo region.
