Dugderan Festival in Semarang
Dugderan, initiated in 1881 by Semarang Regent R.M.T.A. Purbaningrat, publicly marks the start of Ramadan with a combined drum and cannon signal, dug and der, resolving disputes over the correct start date. Centered on a temporary market at Pasar Johar, its parade features the Warak Ngendog, a mythical dragon-Buraq-goat creature symbolizing Semarang's Javanese, Chinese, and Arab heritage, timed to the days just before Ramadan each year.
