Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival in Yogyakarta

Founded in the mid-1990s by gamelan artist Sapto Raharjo and professionalized from 2000 by Komunitas Gayam 16, the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival runs a full week each July, reaching its thirtieth edition in 2025. Centered on contemporary and experimental gamelan composition rather than fixed ceremonial repertoire, it features large-scale gamelan symphony performances by several hundred musicians.

Gamelan artist Sapto Raharjo founded the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival in the mid-1990s with support from the Geronimo Listener Club, a radio-station community, and the event professionalized from 2000 onward under Komunitas Gayam 16, the organization that still runs it today.
