The story

Isfahan Children's Film Festival in Isfahan

Iran's leading children's and youth film festival, based in Isfahan since splitting off from the Fajr Film Festival in 1985, when it introduced its own jury and the Golden Butterfly award. Running for more than three decades, it has been credited with putting Iranian children's cinema on the international festival map, screening features, shorts, and animation for young audiences.

In 1982, children's cinema in Iran was folded into the newly founded Fajr Film Festival as a subsidiary section; three years later, in 1985, it split into an independent event with its own jury and a signature prize, the Golden Butterfly, awarded in the historic city of Isfahan.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes this festival from Iran's broader film events is its singular, age-specific mandate: rather than a children's sidebar within a general festival, it is a standalone national competition built entirely around cinema for children and youth, complete with its own Golden Butterfly trophy

02

The mystery stays covered

Held mostly in Isfahan but occasionally relocated to Tehran, Kerman, or Hamedan over its history, it is jointly run by a national cinema body, the Farabi Cinema Foundation, and the Isfahan municipal government, giving it both national curatorial reach and a strong civic identity tied to one of Iran's most visited historic cities
