The story

Neyshabur Khayyam Day in Neyshabur

Neyshabur Khayyam Day marks the life of Omar Khayyam, the eleventh-century Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet born in Neyshabur around 18 May 1048. Commemorations are traditionally held at his mausoleum in the city, where visitors gather to honor the man who designed the Jalali calendar and wrote the quatrains later known worldwide as the Rubaiyat.

Omar Khayyam was born in Nishapur, a major city of medieval Khorasan, in 1048, at a time when the region was a center of learning under the Seljuk Empire.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Khayyam is unusual among honored historical figures for having excelled in two disciplines that rarely overlap: rigorous mathematics and lyric poetry

02

The mystery stays covered

He gave the first general geometric solution to cubic equations and calculated the length of the solar year with an accuracy that still holds up, work that underpinned the Jalali calendar still reflected in the Persian calendar used in Iran today

03

The city starts moving

Centuries later, his quatrains reached the English-speaking world through Edward FitzGerald's nineteenth-century translation and became one of the most quoted bodies of verse in world literature

04

The water draws everyone in

Neyshabur, his birthplace and burial site, anchors both legacies in a single location, the mausoleum built over his grave
