The story

Bakhtiari Nomad Festival in Shahrekord/Kuhrang

A provincial festival in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari that opens a window onto the Bakhtiari tribes' twice-yearly kooch, the migration of herding families between Khuzestan's lowlands and the highland pastures around Shahrekord and Kuhrang. Centered on the Malkanon departure ritual, it lets visitors see tent-pitching, felt-making, and pack-animal loading along one of Iran's most demanding pastoral routes.

Twice each year the Bakhtiari tribes load tents, hand-woven kilims, and herds of goats onto mules and cross the Zagros passes between the hot lowlands of Khuzestan and the cool highland pastures around Shahrekord and Kuhrang, a seasonal trek known locally as kooch.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's distinguishing feature is that it follows a living migration rather than staging one: the Bakhtiari kooch crosses several hundred kilometers of Zagros terrain, including river crossings and mountain passes around Kuhrang, twice a year with entire households, herds, and tents in motion

02

The mystery stays covered

Encampments open to visitors show black goat-hair tents, hand-loomed textiles, and the Malkanon blessing ritual opening the spring trek

03

The city starts moving

Chaharmahal-Bakhtiari, Iran's second-most nomad-populated province, is separately pursuing UNESCO recognition for the migration tradition, giving the festival a conservation dimension beyond generalized multi-tribe showcases
