The story

Duhok International Film Festival in Duhok

An annual film festival in Duhok, Kurdistan Region, launched in 2011 by the KRG's Ministry of Culture and Youth alongside the Berlin Kurdish Film Festival. Built to showcase Kurdish and international cinema and rebrand the region as a cultural rather than conflict-defined space, it has run most years since, pausing only during the ISIS war and the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Kurdistan Regional Government's Ministry of Culture and Youth launched the Duhok International Film Festival in 2011, running the first edition in cooperation with the Berlin Kurdish Film Festival, a partnership meant to connect a young regional festival directly to an established diaspora film network in Europe.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Its founding partnership with the Berlin Kurdish Film Festival gives it a built-in link to the Kurdish diaspora film network in Europe, unusual among Iraqi festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

The program is explicitly organized around Kurdish-language and Kurdistan-set film as its core category rather than folding Kurdish work into a broader Arab or Middle Eastern competition section

03

The city starts moving

Government backing comes specifically from the Kurdistan Regional Government rather than Iraq's federal Ministry of Culture, reflecting the region's separate cultural administration
