The story

Mosul Tells Cultural Festival in Mosul/Baghdad/Erbil/Sulaymaniyah

A touring arts festival built on the Mosul Tells oral-history project, staged across five cities, Sulaimaniyya, Erbil, Baghdad, Bakhdida, and Mosul, between March and May 2024. Funded by Germany's Federal Foreign Office and the Art+ program, it presented a puppet show, photography, graphic-novel artwork, and animated folk tales aimed at rebuilding social cohesion after the ISIS occupation, drawing over 500 attendees.

The Mosul Tells Cultural Festival Tour brought a touring program of puppetry, animation, photography, and graphic-novel art to five Iraqi cities, Sulaimaniyya, Erbil, Baghdad, Bakhdida, and Mosul itself, between March and May 2024, drawing more than 500 attendees across the tour.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Its defining feature is the multi-city touring structure itself: rather than a single Mosul-based event, the festival deliberately carried Mosul's stories to audiences in four other cities, reflecting a design aimed at repairing connections between Mosul and the rest of Iraq rather than only reconstructing cultural life within the city

02

The mystery stays covered

The program also combines several distinct media in one touring package, puppetry, documentary photography, graphic-novel illustration, and computer animation, all drawn from the same underlying oral-history collection effort
