The story

Cuirt International Festival of Literature in Galway

Cuirt International Festival of Literature has run every April in Galway since 1986, hosted by the Galway Arts Centre. It centres on in-conversation readings with international and Irish writers, poets and novelists, using the Town Hall Theatre and Arts Centre as anchor venues across the compact city.

Cuirt takes its name from the Irish word for court, a nod to the bardic courts of poetry that once moved between Gaelic households, and Galway's version of that tradition has run every April since 1986 under the wing of the Galway Arts Centre.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Its focus on live in-conversation formats, writers questioned directly about process and work rather than delivering standalone readings, distinguishes it from festivals built purely around book signings, and its long-running attention to literature in translation gives it an international range unusual for a festival of its size

02

The mystery stays covered

Its long-running attention to poetry and fiction in translation, alongside anglophone Irish and international writing, gives it a broader linguistic range than many comparably sized literary festivals elsewhere in Ireland
