Growing out of a single film screening at the 1987 Galway Arts Festival, this festival became a standalone annual event under founders including Lelia Doolan, Bob Quinn, Miriam Allen, and Joe MacMahon, with roots tracing to the Galway Film Society, and it now runs each July as one of Ireland's largest film festivals by attendance across roughly six days at the Town Hall Theatre and Pálás Cinema.
