The story

Waterford Walls in Waterford

An August mural festival in Waterford City, founded in 2015 by schoolteacher Edel Tobin after visiting Tunisia's Djerbahood street art project, growing from twenty-five to as many as fifty artists per edition and leaving permanent murals across the city rather than temporary festival art, with murals completed during each edition remaining permanently on the city's buildings long after the festival itself ends.

Local schoolteacher and community activist Edel Tobin founded this mural festival in 2015 after being inspired by the Djerbahood street art project in Tunisia, launching what is regularly described as the first festival of its kind in Ireland to transform a city's derelict, economic-crash-era buildings into a permanent open-air gallery.

It is regularly described as the first festival of its kind in Ireland, specifically transforming buildings left derelict since the economic crash into permanent public art

03

The city starts moving

Its founding inspiration, the Djerbahood street art project in Tunisia, gave Edel Tobin a specific model for turning derelict buildings into a lasting public gallery
