The story

Yn Chruinnaght Celtic Gathering in Peel/Douglas

Yn Chruinnaght began in 1924 as a Manx national gathering focused on reviving Manx Gaelic language and music, later expanding into a festival celebrating the Isle of Man's cultural ties with Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany. Held mainly in Peel each July with events also in Douglas and St Johns, six days combine concerts, ceilidhs, language workshops, and a craft fair.

Yn Chruinnaght traces its roots to 1924, when it began as Cruinnaght Vanninagh Ashoonagh, a Manx national gathering built around preserving Manx Gaelic language and traditional music at a time when both were in serious decline on the island.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals anywhere gather representatives from all six Celtic-language nations, the Isle of Man, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany, in one recurring program

02

The mystery stays covered

most inter-Celtic events focus on a single pairing or a specific art form

03

The city starts moving

Yn Chruinnaght's roots in a 1924 Manx-language revival movement also give it a functional purpose beyond performance: its ceilidhs and language sessions actively transmit Manx Gaelic to younger participants rather than simply showcasing it, tying the festival directly to the island's ongoing language-revival efforts
