The story

Herzliya Biennial in Herzliya

A contemporary art biennial held in Herzliya across three editions between 2007 and 2011, founded by curator Joshua Simon and centered on the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art plus unconventional sites across the city. Framed initially around the aftermath of the 2006 Lebanon War, it featured artists including Guy Ben-Ner, Sigalit Landau and Mika Rottenberg, but no editions have been documented since 2011.

The Herzliya Biennial of Contemporary Art opened its first edition on September 23, 2007, under the curatorship of Joshua Simon, then 28 years old and, at the time, the youngest curator to lead an Israeli biennial.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The founding 2007 edition used bomb shelters, storage warehouses and private apartments across Herzliya as exhibition sites alongside the museum itself, an unusually dispersed, city-wide format for a biennial

02

The mystery stays covered

Its debut curator, Joshua Simon, was 28 at the time, reportedly the youngest curator to lead an Israeli biennial exhibition
