Calendimaggio Assisi in Assisi

For three days after the first of May, Assisi's two historic quarters, Parte de Sopra and Parte de Sotto, compete in costumed song, dance, archery and pageantry recalling the town's medieval rivalries. Reorganized in 1927 by historian Arnaldo Fortini from older spring folk rites, the festival ends with a jury awarding a painted banner to the winning quarter.

Assisi divides into two rival quarters, Parte de Sopra and Parte de Sotto, for three days of costumed pageantry each spring, competing in singing, archery and crossbow contests, processions and staged tableaux drawn from the town's medieval and Renaissance history.
